Lito
(2021-2023)
My uncle “Lito” suffered from schizophrenia and a severe developmental delay since birth, this seriously affected his mental health. As time went by, the situation worsened critically, his desire to kill himself became more and more, the days he walked on the sidewalk became fewer and fewer, the talks were not the same as before, the sadness grew and the hope for a better future was lost little by little. His only light in the mornings was my family and I. We were the only reason why he decided to continue walking the path of his illness, swallowing hundreds of pills a week, getting out of bed, turning on the radio and changing the shirt he had been wearing since last month.
After 18 years of visiting his house, one day I decided to tell the story of his life, what went through his mind, how a person with mental health problems lives, feels and thinks. A part of society that in my country and in many parts of the world is forgotten and made invisible. This work accidentally narrates the last year of my uncle Lito’s life. He passed away in January 2023 due to a heart attack at home.
A document that tries to raise awareness and leave in memory the unfair life that my uncle and my family had to go through.
